Caving Operations Order:

CAVE TRIP 

Mission :  Fri-Sun MAY  3,4,5 ,2024   CAVE TRIP to Climax Cave & Saltpeter in Berea ,KY  

We will have a WEEKEND TRIP to spelunk inside Climax Cave. Next to Climax Church ,Mt Vernon, KY 40456  

(see caving packing list below)

WEATHER is dependent.  If rain is forecast, we may cancel. (hello Thailand)

We have been grantes special permission to enter these caves and there will be 3 other troops going on this.

 

We will meet at Centenary lot then depart from the Centenary church at Fri 6 pm-ish and travel to Berea.  See parking map below.

Parents should return to Berea about 8am Sunday, to the Climax church right next to the cave entrance.

 

Covid protocols are lifted so  we will all carpool from the Centenary to the cave. (and back)

 

MEALS

We will have lunch in the cave , so bring a bag lunch.

There will not be any cooking as we have done in the past, with cooks & coolers & chuckboxes,

instead we will only eat backpack meals that you bring.  After the cave, the cook may prepare a hot dinner.  THIS IS DEPENENT ON THE SIGNUP ROSTER.

Low turnout may change the meal plan.

 

Scouts may bring a backpack stove to heat water for their backpacking meal, or just eat packaged no-cook foods. 

 

WATER

There are no drinking fountains in the cave.  BRING A LARGE WATER SUPPLY.

Bring at minimum a 1/2 GALLON JUG OF WATER  (link: like this 1/2 gallon juice container , or large camelback)  

 

There are no restrooms in the cave.  We may camp near the entrance so scouts may go outside to perform #2.  Nothing is to be left in the cave. Everything must be carried out. (hint,hint)

 

We have some helmets but try to bring your own: either construction hard hat, or cycling helmet.

__CLASS B UNIFORM  (we will wear travelling ,To-AND-From the campsite)

__Cave Clothes (We will change upon arrival: some kind of sweat wicking clothing or wool shirt/sweater, wool socks, so you dont get cold when wet)

__Trash bags (for putting wet dirty clothes into after the cave)

__Day Pack  (for the hike)

___non cave Clothes (change of clothing AFTER caving, change of wool socks, change of liner socks, underwear, tee shirt, long sleeve shirt)

__Gloves

__Knee Pads

__Boots  (good hiking boots for caving)

__Sneakers (for NON caving activity)

__LUNCH..Snacks (for the trip & cave)

__Flash light / Head light + 3 sources of light

__Batteries

__ Water bottle  (filled with water)

__Emergency kit (including a whistle, pocket knife,  etc)

__Wet Weather Protection Gear (Rain Jacket and Pants- pants are optional)

__Personal First Aid Kit

__Extra money for Dairy Queen

 Carryon for the bus:

In a plastic bag – bring the clothes you will change into after travel (we will leave ALL uniform pieces – including Scout socks on the bus so we can travel home in clean uniforms).

 

NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES    (gameboys, DVD players, phones)

NOTICE!!
Sheath, butterfly, and survival type knives, etc. are not allowed on
the reservation. IF brought, the Scoutmaster should hold them until the Scout returns home. 

All fuel (propane, white gas) must be checked in and held by an adult until it is needed. Only adult leaders should handle fuel.
